GaiaHub Liepāja helps the people of Liepāja track environmental metrics like CO2 emissions, number of cars, and air quality.
The AQI is an indicator for communicating pollution in the air.
Every country has their own AQI system, but there’s also a European version.

Air quality is excellent
Particulate matter up to 2.5 microns - fine particles affecting lungs.
Particulate matter - dust and pollen, affecting respiratory systems.
Nitrogen oxide from vehicles and industry, harmful to lungs.
Sulphur dioxide from fossil fuels, irritating to airways.
Ozone at ground level, major component of smog.
We help track and understand what’s in the air we breathe using smart technology. Our focus is on traffic – one of the biggest sources of urban pollution – because that’s where we can make the biggest difference together.
A full bus can replace 60 cars on the road
Walking or cycling for short trips helps both air quality and your health
Electric vehicles produce zero direct emissions

We only use public information we get from the car registry (CSDD) in order to query vehicles’ pollution data. We completely anonymise the data and only show summaries of information to the officials.
We track vehicle counts, types of vehicles, fuel types, and traffic patterns throughout the day.
We use cameras at intersections to recognise types of vehicles and based on the information, calculate their average emissions.
The information helps us raise awareness with the people of Liepāja and helps the city make better decisions about mobility.

Tracking air quality is essential for ensuring the health and well-being of Liepāja's citizens and for achieving long-term environmental sustainability goals.
Clean air is vital for reducing the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, particularly for children, the elderly, and vulnerable populations.
Monitoring and improving air quality aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and Goal 13 (Climate Action).
The city has pledged to adopt sustainable practices, including reducing emissions from urban transport, promoting green spaces, and transitioning to renewable energy sources to improve overall air quality.
Moving towards a greener future is a job for everyone, not just government officials. Each and every one of us can contribute to the change.
Plan trips during lower pollution times
Choose cleaner transport options
Use eco-driving techniques

Our work in Liepāja isn’t just about our city – it’s part of a bigger global effort. We’re helping meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are like a worldwide action plan for a better future:

Cleaner air means healthier people. By reducing vehicle emissions, we help everyone breathe easier and live better.

By tracking and reducing traffic emissions, we’re making our city more livable and environmentally friendly. Cleaner air, less noise, and better spaces for everyone.

Every reduction in emissions helps fight climate change. When we choose to walk, cycle, or take the bus, we’re part of the solution.

We’re using smart technology to solve real problems. Our traffic monitoring system shows how innovation can make cities better for everyone.
